Towanda's Ladder 2
1980 Mack - 100'
A Brief History of
Towanda's Fire Departments
Up to 1837 only four fires had occurred
in Towanda. On the 16th of December, 1837, a
committee consisting of O.D. Barlett, M.C. Mercur, G.A. Mix and William B. Storm, was
appointed to examine stoves, chimneys, fire-places, ect., and report in relation to the same.
At the same meeting, Ordinance 24 was passed by the Council, laying a tax of $150 for the
purchase of 100 fire buckets, necessary fire hooks and ladders.
On June 18,1838, the council directed the High Constable to see that a fire engine was put in
order and kept under shelter. The first fire engine of the village was a "rotary" and was operated
by cranks on each side with four men to each. It had no "suction hose", and the box was filled
with water by the bucket company. The leading hose was about sixteen feet long. It was named
the "Alley", and did service until the burning of the "dry kiln" on the river bank in 1849, when it
was condemned and thrown into the Susquehanna river.
In March 11, 1839, the Council passed a resolution to appropriate $125 for the erection of an
engine house, to be located on the public square. The building was put up at a cost of $118 by John
Morris. This building housed the "Franklin Hand Engine"
On December, 1853, the Burgess contracted with L. Button & Co. of Waterford, N.Y. for an engine of 28-man power and 500 feet of leather leading hose. At a meeting of the council , March 25,1854, on motion of James Mackinson, the name of the new engine was styled "Franklin No. 1".
The engine arrived and was accepted by the committee on April 7,1854.
Fires became frequent in 1867-68, the Franklin Company deemed it necessary to procure a steam fire engine. A sufficient sum was promptly raised to purchase a "Silby's" rotary steam engine and 500 feet of hose. The Franklin Company moto was "Always on hand and ready for action"
Naiad Hose Company, No.2 was instituted April 24,1855 and incorporated July 8,1881. The Naiads moto was "First at the Fire" Their early equipment included two hand engines, a "Button" and a "Cowing" parade carriage.
The Lin-ta company was instituted September 28,1857 and was incorported in May 1871. The Lin-ta's owned a rotary steam fire engine. In 1922, the Naiad and Lin-ta companies merged into one organization, known as the Naiad-Linta Fire Company.
The Mantua Hook and Ladder Company, No. 4 was organized March 1871. They owned an excellent, hand-drawn hook and ladder truck, supplied with buckets, picks, axes, extension and roof ladders. With the passing of the year, interest waned in this type of equipment, and department records show that the last time they reported an election of officers to the chief was in 1917.
The residents of "Toytown" took an interestin fire protection after the Hawes toy factory was erected, and on May 2,1892, organized the H.W. Hawes Hose Company, No. 5. This company disbanded in 1935.
In January 1999, the Franklin Engine
Company, No. 1 and the Naiad-Linta Fire Company merged as one
and is now known as the "Towanda Fire Department"
The Firemen's Prayer:
When I'm called to duty God
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age
Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property
And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife
